About Dr. Maria Isabel Umali

Clinical-Commercial Strategist | Building Systems Where Silos Exist

Board-certified eye surgeon turned healthcare executive. I apply the discipline and rigor of medicine to drive business growth. I build systems where fragmentation exists, turning complexity into care that's more accessible, efficient, and sustainable.

I'm a board-certified eye surgeon who transitioned into the corporate side of healthcare, driven by a desire to make a broader impact across the system.

In medicine, we're trained to gather the data, see the whole picture, diagnose precisely, manage and monitor. I've carried that same discipline into a larger patient: the healthcare organization. Over the years, I've moved from the operating room into strategy, marketing, customer experience, operations, and health insurance, and with each role, I came to see healthcare not from a single vantage point, but as one interconnected system.

What I've learned about my own work is that I build systems where fragmentation exists, order where there is chaos. Whether standardizing new facility rollouts, launching a network's first unified digital platform, architecting utilization management and cost-containment frameworks, or restructuring teams around clarity and accountability, the throughline is turning complexity into something coherent, repeatable, and scalable.

I stay anchored in evidence and focused on measurable outcomes. I care less about being the smartest person in the room and more about leaving the room working better than I found it. I want to build rooms that outlast me.

I'm also a lifelong learner at heart, self-motivated, endlessly curious, and driven by a growth mindset. I believe experience is a powerful teacher, but the willingness to keep learning, adapting, and thinking beyond your own role is what truly sustains great leadership.

I'm most alive at the intersection of clinical insight, operational rigor, and business strategy, where medicine and business stop competing and start building something greater together. Because I've learned that the future of healthcare won't be shaped by those who know the most. It will be shaped by those who never stop learning, never stop building, and never stop seeing the system as a whole.
